Dipsacus fullonum L.

It belongs to the family Dipsacaceae, is a species hemicryptophyte, biannual and can reach 1.80 meters.

Its flowering occurs between April and September, these are pink - lilacs arranged in an oval flower-head, which also contains many small leaves.

Its leaves are opposite the pairs along the spiny stem.

Cultivation

This plant can propagate by sowing at the beginning of spring, February to May or August to October or by divisin of plants with shoots.

It prefers moist soils but can grow on clay soils, however, it needs sun to develop.

As for watering, this is necessary in seasons where there is plant growth, because when it is well developed it is resistant to drought.

History

Native to Southern Europe, Asia and North Africa is in some regions an invasive plant.

Its inflorescence were used to card wool, hence its name.

Utilization

Its "thorn" was used for many centuries to card wool.

Its infusion was used for the treatment of warts, fistulas and acne and its roots have diuretic properties.

Thistle is important for agriculture as it attracts pollinators.
